Kaywoodie 13B "500" Series

I had bid on this pipe, lost, and a week or so later was given a second chance offer, which I accepted.  If it is within my means, I will never pass up on a Kaywoodie 13B.

The "500" Series were Kaywoodie's low-end pipes produced from 1959 -1967.  Patrons could snag them for five dollars a pop... pipe.

I feared that there must be some problem that the first buyer had had with the pipe, thus my second chance, though at nine bucks, I took my chances.

Here is what was shown in the listing:

When I received the pipe, I immediately knew why the first buyer had shipped it back to the seller.  Again, the stem was offset, not lining up as it should.  This is not what angers me.  What angers me is that eBay sellers incessantly neglect to inform buyers of very useful pieces of information.  Why do they wish to receive negative feedback?  In selling pipes, there couldn't be a quicker way to achieve negative feedback than to not mention problems in condition.

My previous post pertaining to a Kaywoodie 13B dealt with how to fix this offset stem problem.  It is fixed here too; however, I've found another problem.  Now that the pipe has been cleaned, the threading on the stinger is not tightening up.  It's lined up, and flush, but won't tighten up.  There are a few dings on the stinger's threading - as if some nutter had taken pliers to it.  By the way, if you, reader, ever do that, please wrap pipe-cleaners around your pliers to prevent them from eating the metal threading.

I feel that this problem may resolve itself with the smoking of the pipe - tobacco resin acting as binding agent upon the threading, thus giving me tightening ability.  At this point, if one puts the pipe up to their mouth, the bowl is apt to turn upside-down.  I've googled for a practical solution to this, but have come up with zip, as of yet.  I refuse to use nail-polish, as it seems quite a toxic substance to put near fire, the smoke from which, one sucks into their mouth, to be absorbed into the bloodstream, to be carried to various vital organs.  Yes, yes, shut up - I know tobacco smoke itself isn't exactly healthy.  Let's not add to it.

Here she is, my latest 13B. after my having refurbished her:

Yes, she really is that brilliantly red!  Quite a nice looking pipe for the season!  I have not yet decided what tobacco it is that would suit her.  Before she was cured with Everclear, she smelt very nasty - that horrible smell that cheap black cavendish leaves - burnt sugar.

This is a considerably smaller pipe.  She will not be seeing anymore cavendish, nor would a latakia suit her.  Hmm........
